Message from the President

In particular, I want to ask those on "booster boards" to help me discredit the news outlets that have carried stories about the arrests of our student athletes.

Some have asked me about strategies. For those who want to lend aid in this moment of discomfort, the best tactic will be what we in Old Queens call KTM. It can be mastered in a second. Maybe faster. Imagine that a doctor comes to you, for instance, with the news that you have an inoperable cancer.

This is not pleasant. The word "inoperable" means that you are going to die soon. But you don't have to just sit there and suffer: you can kill the doctor. That way, you might be dead, but the doctor will be too. You get a feeling of satisfaction.

The Star Liar spins RU's mistakes into bigger problems than they are.

One time it got so bad that RU Fans took out an ad to show how the Star Ledger was spinning the facts into something completely different. Even then the Ledger gave RU fans something to complain about. it placed the ad paid for RU fans in a section where hardly anyone went to. That ad bought and paid for by RU supporters was placed in a section different from where it was expected to be when that ad was placed and paid for!

Still no clear answer on the timing - the nimrods at SL aren't good enough to pursue that angle.

Hard to believe it was simply coincidence regarding the time it took for the police to investigate.

I don't doubt there are people with an agenda against RU FB program.

Why would you do arrests for separate incidences at the same time if it wasn't a conscious strategy?

 GoodOl'Rutgers

This is it. Make a splash. Did they have reporters and media with them for these arrests? Or did they assume the media would be there? Someone is trying to make a name for him or herself.

Do you see these negative articles coming from Yankees and Mets beat reporters! Never! Tara Sullivans article on CC going to rehab the night before the playoffs was fuzzy . . . that b*tch hasnt said a nice thing about Rutgers in a while...i live in New Jersey and get Jersey newspapers and there is never any coverage except these hack pieces

They did it to purposely push someone's agenda. This could have been done any number of ways but someone at the university has a bone to pick with the football program.

 IL Lusciato

This is textbook publicity stunt.

They saw tejay Johnson was a former Rutgers player, so they said "hmmm, this could be big" and they found a way to make it big.

Then they dug up some assault charge on 4 other players so that they could storm practice and arrest a handful of players in grand fashion. Now the news looks as if all the players were part of one common scheme.

Announcing on the Thursday before a long holiday weekend maximizes press attention. That is a slow news time. NJ prosecutors might not be elected but that does not mean they don't use media to promote themselves and their office.

A friend in law enforcement reports it has a lot to do with the ongoing conflict between NBPD and RUPD over policing the 5th & 6th wards. The NB pols haven't got what they wanted from RU. This is a little gotcha action.

 RUInsanity

If you make a grand entrance onto a football field practice to arrest players it gets much more media attention than if you do it behind closed doors.

Ole Cabbagehead

The timing was clearly designed for maximum attention.

That's what gets me about their articles. It's one paragraph of new material than 10 paragraphs rehashing what's gone wrong at RU since the Revolutionary War. That's called having an agenda and why I stopped reading them.

alex13rufan

I am sure this was known for a while.
Why not make the arrests months ago?
Why two days before the season opener?

Thamel is a 1999 graduate of Syracuse University, where he was sports editor of The Daily Orange. Surprised he's not writing for the Newhouse family-owned Star Liar, the same Newhouse family of Syracuse's Newhouse School of Public Communications.
